"I felt that it was something important for us to talk about and revisit and learn from." The movie stars Zana Marjanovic (Snow), Goran Kostic and Rade Serbedzija (In the Rain). Weekend Receipts Unique: Muppets Co-Star Beaker Reduces the holiday Box Office

Of course, America’s taste for leftovers centered the extended Thanksgiving weekend — but enough about Breaking Beginning - Part 1, which handily pressed off newcomer The Muppets for to start with within the holiday box office. The niche meals are what’s really worth sampling, also to help break everything lower, I’d would rather welcome Muppets co-star and special guest box-office correspondent Beaker to provide his typically keen, apparent-eyed experience. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning - Part 1 Gross: $42,000,000 ($221,300,000) Screens: 4,066 (PSA $10,330) Days: 2 (Change: -69.6%) So, Beaker, the initial half from the Twilight finale narrowly avoided obtaining the franchise’s steepest week-two drop, trailing New Moon’s plunge having a mere half-percentage point. Are you currently presently surprised it didn’t break seventy percent? Meemee meemeemee. Meemee, meemeemeemeemee meemeemee. But regardless of this type of idle, expansive Thanksgiving weekend, audiences had plenty of movies to choose from. Shouldn’t it are actually more competitive? Meemeemee, meemee. Meemeemeemee! Meememeemee meemee, meemeemee. Meemee? That’s a great question. Ultimately, though, In my opinion Bill Condon holds his mind high. More than after he co-produced the Oscars, anyway. Meemeemee. Meemee meemeemee, meemeemee — meemeemee meemee. 2. The Muppets Gross: $29,500,000 ($42,000,000) Screens: 3,440 (PSA $8,576) Days: 1 Let’s be realistic, Beaker: $42 million for your Muppets in five days can happen slightly soft, but also for a elevated 󈨊s property essentially remade for people inside their 30s and 40s, that’s much less bad. Meemeemee. Meemee? Meemeemeemeemee. Meemee. Meemeemeemeemee, meemeemee — meemeemee. Meemeemeemee, meemee. And that means you’re disappointed? Meemeemeemee! Meemeemee. Maybe everybody laid the viral marketing and spoof trailers on a touch too thick. Probably The Muppets only decided to be overexposed? Meemeemee! Meemeemeemee, meemee meemee meemee — meemee. OK, fine. So possibly not “you males,” but Disney, rather. Meemeemee. Can you have completed anything in different ways? Like possibly participate in the ensemble — less Jason Segel and may Be, more Kermit and Miss Piggy and— Meemeemeemee. Meemee! Clearly — plus much more Beaker. Mee. Can you’ll think we’ll get yourself a follow-up? Meemeemeemee. Meemee, meemee, meemee. Meemeemeemee. Maybe that can be done an action film meanwhile — kind of a Rachelle LefervreOrAbduction step to test a bolster your leading-guy cred. Meemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemee! Well, you know what happens I'm speaking about. Meemeemee. Meemee! 3. Happy Foot Two Gross: $13,400,000 ($43,773,000) Screens: 3,606 (PSA $3,716) Days: 2 (Change: -36.9%) That’s not always a poor week-two drop whatsoever, can it be? Meemeemee. Meemee, meemee meemeemeemee meemeemeemeemee? I recognize, nevertheless it’s a holiday weekend. The Muppets is for certain to possess competition inherited market. Meemeemeemee, meemeemee. In my opinion you mean, “Four-quandrant, shmour-quadrant.” Meemeemee. Meemeemeemee, meemeemee. 4. Arthur Christmas Gross: $12,700,000 ($17,000,000) Screens: 3,376 (PSA $3,762) Days: 1 See, this is just what I’m talking about: It may have been worse for your Muppets. No less than you didn’t bottom out like Arthur Christmas. Meemeemee, meemee meemee meemeemeemee. Meemeemee! Meemee meemeemeemee meemee meemeemee. I don’t think James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie and Bill Nighy are extremely a few things i’d call “B-list limey voice tarts.” Meemeemee. Meemee? Well, at least because McAvoy is Scottish. Meemeemee, meemee, meemeemeemee. Meemee! Meemeemeemee! 5. Hugo Gross: $11,350,000 ($15,380,000) Screens: 1,277 (PSA $8,888) Days: 1 That is another one I couldn’t peg beginning the weekend. Loved the film, couldn’t see the market. Any idea what? Meemeemee, meemee, meemeemeemee. Meemeemee. Meemee? Meemeemee! The 3-D was advantageous, to make certain. To ensure that as I used to be alluding to a little ago, In my opinion Vital saw the writing round the wall if this involves family-film competition. Was 1,200 screens too conservative, too aggressive, or just right? Meemeemee. Meemeemeemee, meemee. Meemee. Meemeemeemee, meemee, meemee. Meemee! Meemeemee — meemeemee, meemee? Meemeemeemee, meemee. Precisely how wide every time they expand from this level? It seems appreciate it may use either situation. Meemee, meemeemee. Meemeemee meemeemeemeemee meemee. Fantastic. That’s why I like you, Beaker. Meemeemee. — 10. The Descendants Gross: $7,200,000 ($10,741,000) Screens: 433 (PSA $16,628) Days: 2 (Change: +505%) 12. My Week With Marilyn Gross: $1,773,000 ($2,085,000) Screens: 244 (PSA $7,266) Days: 1 23. The Artist Gross: $210,000 (new) Screens: 4 (PSA $52,500) Days: 1 And So The Weinsteins heaped Marilyn as well as the Artist into one weekend — two Oscar hopefuls opposite Fox Searchlight’s own honours-equine The Descendants. I honestly don’t think that’s an experiment even you'd have attempted, and you also’re always coming some misunderstanding. Meemeemee, meemeemeemee. Meemeemeemee. Meemee. Well, let’s not get an excessive amount of before ourselves. The finish result is the greatest theatrical average every week would go to some quiet, black-and-white-colored film created with a French guy. Is it possible to accept it? Meemeemee. Meemee, meemeemeemee — meemee! Will we all agree that Marilyn opened up up too strongly? Like, Michelle Williams wasn’t even really around to market it much — plus it’s her freaking movie. Meemee! Meemeemee, meemeemeemee. Meemeemee. Simply how much you think The Artist might make within the finish throughout your day? Meemeemee. Meemee? Meemee? Wow. What about The Descendants? Meemee. Meemee? Seriously? It’s rated R, it is just Clooney opting for this title-wise… Meemeemee, meemee meemee, meemeemee. Yeah, but no less than Black Swan had lesbians. Meemee. Meemeemeemee. I guess we shouldn’t omit A Dangerous Method at $182,000 on four screens — a $45,500 per-screen average. Meemeemee. Meemee. Yeah, my ideas exactly. Meemee. Appreciate joining me today, Beaker. And, er, oh my gosh God you’re burning! Meemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemee! [Figures via Box Office Mojo] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Gotham kudos mix star energy with low-budget indies

'Meek's Cutoff''Tree of Life''Take Shelter''Beginners''The Descendents'The Gotham Independent Film Honours represent an uncommon mixture of razzle-dazzle and gritty pluck.Held at Cipriani's in Wall Street -- expect lots of OWS-based jokes out of this year's hosts Oliver Platt and Edie Falco -- the kudos are among the couple of places on the planet where the kind of Sean Penn and Meryl Streep brush shoulders with projectionist-filmmaker Ronnie Bronstein and Ghanaian T-shirt salesperson-switched-actor Prince Adu. And where $20 million-plus movies starring major stars can compete -- and lose -- against micro-budget gems starring no-title talent.Remember, it is not only the Gothams, it is the Gotham Independent Film Honours. After studio films "The Departed," "Marie Antoinette" and "Small ChildrenInch were nommed for the best feature in 2006 invoking ire one of the indie community, Gotham coordinators re-top quality the big event in 2008, emphasizing its indie roots and restricting qualified films to individuals with independent distribution, understood to be individuals launched with a niche division, a completely independent distributor or self-distributed."There is lots of backlash," confesses Joana Vicente, the Independent Feature Project's professional director, who had been around the board at that time.Whilst the move might not have transformed the essential character from the Gothams, the IFP's primary fundraiser event where companies fork over $13,000-$30,000 per table, it's further sharp the org's goal of supporting individuals filmmakers who require a hands. This season while Alexander Payne's "The Descendents" and Terrence Malick's "Tree of Existence," both backed by Fox Searchlight, are up for that feature prize, they're became a member of by lower-budget, individually funded "Take Shelter," "Meek's Cutoff" and "Beginners.""It is good that they are all on a single playing area," states Vicente.Such all-inclusiveness could be particularly helpful for any more compact film. As "Take Shelter" producer Tyler Davidson states, "My neighbor might not switch out after i talk Gotham nominations, but he will get excited when I only say we are alongside Pitt and Clooney films. That's creating new audiences. And that is great for everybody -- for all of us, for that Gothams, but for the industry."Indie distribution executives, like Dylan Leiner of The new sony Pictures Classics, that is delivering "Take Shelter," and David Fenkel, leader of Oscilloscope Labs, which distributed nominees "Meek's Cutoff" and "Bellflower," also note the Gothams are ideally timed to jog the reminiscences of customers because the films go out into theaters, or on VOD along with other platforms. And because the first honours of year, Leslie Urdang, producer of "Beginners," states the Gothams, "are an essential indication of movies that opened up earlier around.InchWith out the large advertising pushes of the specialized company, micro-indies or more-and-coming talent may also make use of the Gothams to enhance their careers."That is what I believe we all do best," Vicente states. "Shine an easy on emerging talents, who're this is not on individuals radar, or if they're, we are assisting to solidify that."For low-budget director Sophia Takal, for example, nominated for that film not playing in a theater in your area award on her feature debut, "Eco-friendly," it's that parity with specialized studio fare that may really result in the difference. When she informed her mother the Clooney movie was up for any Gotham too, Takal states her mother "finally felt the cash I lent from her to create 'Green' was worthwhile.InchAssociated LINKS Tribute honors Rothman's indie pic roots Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Burning

Barrett Doss is a Sudanese sex worker, and Stephen Tyrone Williams is an artist who falls in love with her in Burning. A New Group presentation of a play in two acts by Thomas Bradshaw. Directed by Scott Elliott.Paul, et al. - Jeff Biehl Katrin - Reyna de Courcy Gretchen - Barrett Doss Older Chris - Hunter Foster Jack - Andrew Garman Michael - Drew Hildebrand Chris - Evan Johnson Simon - Danny Mastrogiorgio Noah - Andrew Polk Josephine - Larisa Polonsky Donald - Adam Trese Franklin - Vladimir Versailles Peter - Stephen Tyrone WilliamsThe New Group seems to have taken Thomas Bradshaw's semi-pornographic play "Burning" very seriously, and they would probably like us to do likewise. But the episodic plot, which loosely hangs on the coming of age of a teenage hustler, is wide open to ridicule, and the characters are one step up from cartoons. The players in Scott Elliott's lugubrious production solemnly shed their clothes and play their graphically simulated sex scenes without cracking a smile. But it's an effort for the rest of us to keep from howling at the pretensions of this softcore porn show. The first chapter of this sex fantasy opens in 1983, as a 14-year-old hustler named Chris (Evan Johnson) is talking his way into the household of Jack (Andrew Garman), a successful NY actor, and his partner, Simon (Danny Mastrogiorgio), a Broadway producer. Garman and Mastrogiorgio give these silly old queens a certain dignity, although that probably won't matter much to voyeurs who just want to identify with them when the not-so-innocent Chris enthusiastically embraces his role as their sex toy. But kids are bound to grow up, and in due time Chris leaves his loving "parents" for a playwright named Donald (Adam Trese). Bradshaw makes a clumsy attempt to include a grown-up Chris (Hunter Foster) in a parallel scenario set in the present day. But the story really hangs on the sexual education of a black painter named Peter (Stephen Tyrone Williams) who is given a one-man show at an important Berlin art gallery. (Jeff Biehl does such good work in the minor role of a gallery curator, it's a dirty shame he was passed over for a sex scene.) Once in Berlin, Peter runs afoul of Michael (Drew Hildebrand), a rival painter and a neo-Nazi who has an unhealthy relationship with his handicapped 16-year-old sister, Katrin (Reyna de Courcy). Oblivious to the whole Nazi thing -- and forgetting he has a (white) wife back home -- Peter is swept away in the permissive sexual climate and falls madly in love with a Sudanese sex worker. Anyone who's been following the plot so far should be able to see the wealth of possibilities for hook-ups, which the creatives would prefer to think of as "searing and graphic tales of self-invention and sexual identity." In the early scenes we're treated to the relatively straightforward combinations of Jack and Simon; Jack and Simon and Chris; and Chris and Donald. But as the play advances, the logistics become more complicated, especially for Peter, who has both a wife and a mistress to service. For the record, all the simulated sex scenes have been handsomely lighted (by Peter Kaczorowski), and a noticeable bit of artistry went into the smoothly staged scenes between that scary skinhead and his creepy sister. Which might suggest that anyone with a favorite sex fantasy would have no trouble finding someone to stage it.Sets, Derek McLane; costumes, Clint Ramos; lighting, Peter Kaczorowski; projections, Wendall K. Harrington; production stage manager, Valerie A. Peterson. Opened Nov. 14, 2011. Reviewed Nov. 9. Running time: 2 HOURS, 45 MIN. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

'Immortals' rethought 3D process

Stereographers committed to giving pic's characters "human volume" during conversion. 3D or not 3D? That's the question facing a lot of filmmakers as they weigh the extra costs of shooting in 3D or converting 2D footage to 3D against the potential box office upside of a 3D release. "Immortals," the Tarsem-helmed, vfx-heavy saga that opens Friday, faced no such dilemma. It was planned from the start as a 3D movie. But after shooting a handful of scenes in 3D early on, the producers opted to take the conversion route, both to improve production efficiencies and to manage costs. They also took steps to avoid some of the pitfalls of the conversion process that have bedeviled earlier films, which were criticized for their headache-inducing images and pop-up-book appearance. "We did a thorough analysis whether it would be better to shoot in 3D or to convert," said Tucker Tooley, the film's exec producer and co-prexy of Relativity Media, which produced the Universal release. One factor encouraging conversion was Tarsem's speed as a director. "He's just go, go, go, and when he's working fast, he gets a different energy and puts the whole film together in his head," said longtime collaborator and d.p. Brendan Galvin. "Some say it takes 10% longer to shoot in 3D. I think there's quite a bit more difference." The other reason was financial. "We saved money by shooting in 2D and converting to 3D in post," said Tooley. The bulk of the conversion was handled by the Mumbai facility of Prime Focus, where stereographer David Stump spent months supervising the work. "Shooting 3D would have required more cameras and technology, and would have allowed fewer setups per day, with extras waiting around the block for the battle scenes," said Stump. "It would have run into serious money -- a lot more than converting it. We did tests for Tarsem so he could see what it would look like, and he signed off. We committed to giving the characters 'human volume' so they wouldn't look like flat cardboard cutouts, and to achieve roundness in their faces." In fact, a small number of "Immortals" scenes were shot in 3D -- including material intended for a teaser trailer that ended up being a used in the film itself -- but the vast majority of the footage was captured in 2D. "I'm not saying I wouldn't shoot 3D," said Galvin. "I can see situations where that would be better. But on this particular film, with the ingredients we had, it wasn't the way to go." "Immortals," which cost almost $85 million, shot in 62 days on a soundstage in Montreal using Panavision Genesis digital cameras. "Conversion is a great tool if you start with that in mind," said Tooley. "It worked because we designed everything for the conversion." To further enhance the film's 3D display, "Immortals" is being made available in a higher-brightness version through technology from Real D and Master Image to compensate for the darkening effect of 3D glasses.
