The 10 Biggest Snubs, Surprises and Subplots of the 69th Golden Globes Nominations

Still reeling from this week’s installment of Oscar index, Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics has had a rare Thursday open for business. Blame the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the shadowy swag goblins behind today’s predictably headscratching slate of snubs, surprises and subplots also known as the 69th Golden Globe nominations. So far the Institute has chosen 10 worth investigating, but feel free to weigh in with your own as well: SUBPLOT: Is The Ides of March for real? George Clooney’s fine political drama bowed strongly but perhaps prematurely in the awards race, eventually ceding its early front-runner terrain to the likes of The Help and Hugo. (I can’t believe I just wrote that sentence.) Its dormancy extended through virtually every awards announcement before today, when it collected four nominations, including Best Picture - Drama, Best Director, Best Actor - Drama (Ryan Gosling), and Best Screenplay. What are we to think, and how much influence do we really want to ascribe to a pliant, star-fucking awards bloc that added an extra nomination in the Drama category just to make sure its bases were covered? I still think it’s toast overall — not enough first-place votes to sneak it into the Academy’s Best Picture consciousness, and it doesn’t stand a chance going up against Fox Searchlight’s Tree of Life campaign. “But,” one may ask, “where’s Tree of Life at the Globes?” Easy: Brad Pitt is at the Moneyball table, and Jessica Chastain is at The Help table. That’s all the HFPA cares about. The Academy has slightly different standards — but only slightly. So we’ll see. SNUB: Melissa McCarthy The Bridesmaids scene-stealer’s omission wouldn’t seem so conspicuous were it not for her surge over the last week and the film itself earning two nominations in Best Picture - Musical/Comedy and Actress - Musical/Comedy. I can’t even legitimately float the thought that NBC — which broadcasts the Globes — pushed for recognition of its SNL star over CBS’s Mike and Molly star; after all, NBC Universal released Bridesmaids. What’s an awards conspiracy theorist to do? Anyway, Academy tastes will settle this in a month, and I for one can totally wait. SUBPLOT: The Weinstein Factor On the one hand, TWC led all individual distributors with 12 nominations; Harvey took full advantage of the split categories in Picture and Actress, moving Michelle Williams in for the Musical/Comedy kill. That’s ridiculous by any standard but the HFPA’s and, well, Harvey’s. But at the end of the day, when Williams wins, it’s only small print on the DVD box. On the other hand… SUBPLOT: The Sony Factor Particularly apropos of Ides, I’m just going to throw this stat out there for your consideration of how Golden Globes sausage is made: Sony subsidiaries — including Columbia Pictures and Sony Classics — combined for 22 out of 71 nominations on the film side. Think about it: Almost every third nominee — 31 percent — is a Sony product, or at least one acquired and branded by Sony. Do what you will with that. SNUB: Uggie What has four legs, 2,000 supporters and apparently can’t be budged — even by Harvey Weinstein? [Insert a long, lusty “BOOOOOO” here.] SURPRISE: Ryan Gosling You know what? I think it’s great that Gosling got in for Crazy Stupid Love. That’s what the Musical/Comedy category is there for (even if technically he’s supporting Steve Carell, but that’s the last objection I’m going to raise to this crop of nominees), and he and Emma Stone arguably account for the entire soul of that movie. Good luck, Gos! That said, why ya gotta go all ninja-like on… SNUB: Gary Oldman Brutal. Absolutely brutal. But despite incredible early critical and commercial interest, the guy can’t buy a break at the Critics Choice Awards, the Globes, or even with his own freaking union. And while I don’t see Gosling carrying his Ides citation over to the Academy, Oldman still has Michael Shannon and Demián Bichir to fight off for the fifth slot. It could happen, but as downswings go, this is pretty bad. I mean, even Woody Harrelson got to plug Rampart this morning during the nominations announcement. SUBPLOT: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Finished Maybe there’s something I’m missing about The Daldry, but to expand the Best Picture - Drama category and not include this seems like a sizable red flag. In any case, it’s a serious statistical disadvantage: The only film to win the Oscar for Best Picture without even being nominated for the Golden Globes’ Best Picture - Drama award was Crash in 2006. (The Sting did it without a Musical/Comedy nod back in 1974.) Simply drawing a Best Picture Oscar nomination under such circumstances is a little easier, but not much: Milk did it in 2009, preceded by Lost in Translation in 2004, and then The Sixth Sense in 2000. Not good. SNUB: Nick Nolte This is probably the Globes snub with the least likelihood of reflecting in the Oscar nominations: Nolte’s SAG recognition should even out Mortensen’s mysterious Sony bump soon enough. No offense to Viggo, either, who’s one of the few bright spots of A Dangerous Method; I just have a feeling that his nomination here will just rally Team Nolte. SURPRISE: Rooney Mara Yay! Someone was listening! Or maybe the HFPA is just fundamentally opposed to nominating an Olsen. It’s not like Mary-Kate or Ashley ever made the cut, right? Coincidence? OK, don’t answer that. 'Harry Potter' Among Greatest Golden Globe Snubs

For each listing of movie award nominations, there'll most likely be a nearly equally lengthy listing of snubs. Not surprisingly, the 2011 Golden Globe nominations skipped a few of the year's best product, but a few of the snubs were too large to disregard. To right a few of the wrongs, we selected our five most unforgivable oversights in the Golden Globe nominations. No Original Song Nominations for 'The Muppets' You would be hard-pressed to locate somebody that did not go out of "The Muppets" belting out "Guy or Muppet" or whizzing "Life's A Contented Song." Inside a fair and merely world, Bret McKenzie's focus on the film might have adopted three from the five slots, because apart from being appealing as hell, the tunes made the film work in addition to it did. No Actor Nomination for Gary Oldman in 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' Gary Oldman happens to be among film's most animated stars, then when he completed as quiet and controlled of the performance because he did with "Mess, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," people required notice. Sadly, the HFPA weren't included in this. Oldman hasn't been nominated for whether Golden Globe or perhaps an Academy awards. That do I blame? EEVVVERRYYOONNEE! No Director Nomination for Terrence Malick for 'Tree of Life' No matter what your location is around the cosmic aspects of the "Tree of Existence," director Terrence Malick warrants recognition for that scope, scale and vision of his epic. He taken a few of the year's best performances making a movie unlike anything we have seen before. Comparatively, most of the other director nominations appear safe. No Lead Actor Nomination for Michael Shannon in 'Take Shelter' Like a guy battling using the finish around the globe and/or losing his sanity, Michael Shannon commanded the screen in "Take Shelter" and demonstrated he's probably the most interesting stars working today. The scene in the community center alone was worth a nomination, but fortunately, Shannon is the kind of actor which will show on shortlists for a long time. No Best Film Nomination for 'Harry Potter and also the Deathly Hallows - Part 2' It had been always a lengthy shot, but when you match it up movie to each other this season when it comes to emotional payback, it clearly deserved a Best Film nomination. 10 years within the making, "Deathly Hallows - Part 2" had the highest order associated with a movie this year: deliver a satisfying conclusion and act as a standalone movie. Not just made it happen fulfill its promises, it surpassed anticipation. Honorable Mention: Nearly Every Television Category The HFPA always favors more recent shows, however they required it too much this season. By nominating seven new series for that ten Best Series slots, they handled to snub "Parks and Entertainment," "Breaking Bad," and "Friday Evening Lights." Using the latter two, the HFPA also skipped apparent actor nominations for Aaron Paul, Giancarlo Esposito and Kyle Chandler. Don't even cause me to feel point out that they overlooked Steve Carrell's last episodes on "Work.Inch What were your greatest snubs? Tell us within the comments below as well as on Twitter!

'Just Cause: Scorpion Rising' Video Game Adaptation Taps Writer (Exclusive)

William Morris Agency's iconic Beverly Hills headquarters has been sold for $47.8 million. Los Angeles-based real estate investor CIM Group purchased the two-building property at 150 and 151 El Camino Drive from Brickman, a NY real estate investment firm.our editor recommendsEXCLUSIVE: Auction for William Morris Headquarters Called OffEXCLUSIVE: William Morris Headquarters for Sale The three-story, 116,000-square-foot complex is situated on more than an acre and houses some offices of WME, the successor agency to William Morris. The Dec. 9 deal breaks down to $412 per square foot -- considered a market-rate transaction for a Class A commercial property in Beverly Hills. The buildings are one block from the city's Rodeo Drive shopping area and near WME's 9601 Wilshire Blvd. headquarters, which the agency has occupied since April 2009. "You are one block out of the Golden Triangle, one of the best markets in Los Angeles, which attracts a lot of entertainment-related clients," saidBob Safai of commercial real estate brokerage Madison Partners, who represented Brickman in the deal. In September 2008, William Morris sold the two buildings and another at 150 S. Rodeo Drive to investor Cape Horn Group for $143 million, or $783 per square foot. Despite the quality of the asset, the price paid by the Chilean company was considered high. Brickman, which was Cape Horn's lender on the deal, later acquired the properties from the company via a deed in lieu of foreclosure transaction. Brickman sold the Rodeo property to Los Angeles-based real estate investment firm Douglas Emmett Inc. in April for $42 million. While the 151 El Camino Drive building is vacant, the 150 building is fully occupied. WME houses its music division in much of that building; the company plans to move out of the space, though there is no timetable for vacating it. At the time of the September 2008 property sale, William Morris said it would stay at the El Camino property until a new Beverly Drive building it planned to occupy was complete. However, the agency's 2009 merger with Endeavor changed those plans. WME backed out of a lease agreement to occupy the new building, built by NY-based commercial real estate firm George Comfort & Sons. MGM is now slated to move into the 235-269 N. Beverly Drive building, though WME's dispute with the developerwas the subject of an arbitration. THR reported in July that WME has appealed an arbitrator's ruling that George Comfort violated its lease with the agency by allowingGersh, a competitor, to move to another Comfort-owned building next door to the proposed WME site, but this breach was not material enough to warrant WME walking out on the lease. The result of WME's appeal has not been made public, and it is unclearwhat damages WME must pay to the developer, if any. CIM Group declined to comment. Brickman did not respond to emails seeking comment. Email: Daniel.Miller@THR.com Twitter: @DanielNMiller Related Topics Real Estate

Naomi W Joins Grandmas

Alongside Robin WrightGiven the film bears the title The Grandmas, you might be pardoned for supposing it is a fundamental drama about old biddies pottering about, clucking over their cats or doing a little of knitting. Nevertheless the film that Naomi W and Robin Wright have signed on for is a factor quite different. The truth is, Coco Before Chanel's Anne Fontaine is filming an adaptation Doris Lessing's novel, which finds two long-term pals who create a scandal after they be lured by one another peoples teenage sons.Fontaine is working in the script by Christopher Hampton, who knows a couple of reasons for questionable love, getting acquired an Oscar for writing Dangerous Liaisons.W and Wright's co-stars inside the film are Xavier Samuel (Anonymous) and James Frecheville, who came out in Animal Kingdom.W will next come in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar (which arrives the following around the month of the month of january 20) and contains just a little role in comedy shorts compilation Movie 43. Wright will probably be seen in David Fincher's The Woman While Using Dragon Tattoo (which will finally be on December 26 and contains just shoved out a lengthy trailer), and Rampart, due on February 10. Even Though Hollywood Reporter is breaking word the Grandmas is now offering financing in place, a hat tip to Screen Daily for nabbing the story initially.

But, I now have to get her home It could take up to a year to get her home. Jillian, 37, met the girl she is hoping to adopt on a trip to Haiti. I went over to visit orphanages and I ended up falling in love with this little girl, and by the grace of God, I got matched up with her, she said. So now, its just a matter of trying to get her home and anything can happen and fall through or fall apart, so its kind of premature for me to say it, but thats where its at. So if it falls apart, youll know why Im like, devastated and not coming out of my house for months, she added. As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, during a visit to Access Hollywood Live in back in April, the tough-talking trainer said she was making huge progress in her quest to adopt, although the anticipation was taking a toll on her body. Im actually so excited, Jillian told Billy and Kit, when asked about the status of her adoption. The government shut down almost, [and] all I could think about was my 600A [immigration adoption] form! I was like, Oh my God, Ive developed an eye twitch! I called my business partner and was like, My eye is spontaneously twitching, she continued. But then, fortunately, I just got my immigration paper. So now Im this much closer and all the paperwork is done. It just needs to go to the various embassies its a godsend. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. Weekend Receipts Unique: Muppets Co-Star Beaker Reduces the holiday Box Office

Of course, America’s taste for leftovers centered the extended Thanksgiving weekend — but enough about Breaking Beginning - Part 1, which handily pressed off newcomer The Muppets for to start with within the holiday box office. The niche meals are what’s really worth sampling, also to help break everything lower, I’d would rather welcome Muppets co-star and special guest box-office correspondent Beaker to provide his typically keen, apparent-eyed experience. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning - Part 1 Gross: $42,000,000 ($221,300,000) Screens: 4,066 (PSA $10,330) Days: 2 (Change: -69.6%) So, Beaker, the initial half from the Twilight finale narrowly avoided obtaining the franchise’s steepest week-two drop, trailing New Moon’s plunge having a mere half-percentage point. Are you currently presently surprised it didn’t break seventy percent? Meemee meemeemee. Meemee, meemeemeemeemee meemeemee. But regardless of this type of idle, expansive Thanksgiving weekend, audiences had plenty of movies to choose from. Shouldn’t it are actually more competitive? Meemeemee, meemee. Meemeemeemee! Meememeemee meemee, meemeemee. Meemee? That’s a great question. Ultimately, though, In my opinion Bill Condon holds his mind high. More than after he co-produced the Oscars, anyway. Meemeemee. Meemee meemeemee, meemeemee — meemeemee meemee. 2. The Muppets Gross: $29,500,000 ($42,000,000) Screens: 3,440 (PSA $8,576) Days: 1 Let’s be realistic, Beaker: $42 million for your Muppets in five days can happen slightly soft, but also for a elevated 󈨊s property essentially remade for people inside their 30s and 40s, that’s much less bad. Meemeemee. Meemee? Meemeemeemeemee. Meemee. Meemeemeemeemee, meemeemee — meemeemee. Meemeemeemee, meemee. And that means you’re disappointed? Meemeemeemee! Meemeemee. Maybe everybody laid the viral marketing and spoof trailers on a touch too thick. Probably The Muppets only decided to be overexposed? Meemeemee! Meemeemeemee, meemee meemee meemee — meemee. OK, fine. So possibly not “you males,” but Disney, rather. Meemeemee. Can you have completed anything in different ways? Like possibly participate in the ensemble — less Jason Segel and may Be, more Kermit and Miss Piggy and— Meemeemeemee. Meemee! Clearly — plus much more Beaker. Mee. Can you’ll think we’ll get yourself a follow-up? Meemeemeemee. Meemee, meemee, meemee. Meemeemeemee. Maybe that can be done an action film meanwhile — kind of a Rachelle LefervreOrAbduction step to test a bolster your leading-guy cred. Meemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemeemee! Well, you know what happens I'm speaking about. Meemeemee. Meemee! 3. Happy Foot Two Gross: $13,400,000 ($43,773,000) Screens: 3,606 (PSA $3,716) Days: 2 (Change: -36.9%) That’s not always a poor week-two drop whatsoever, can it be? Meemeemee. Meemee, meemee meemeemeemee meemeemeemeemee? I recognize, nevertheless it’s a holiday weekend. The Muppets is for certain to possess competition inherited market. Meemeemeemee, meemeemee. In my opinion you mean, “Four-quandrant, shmour-quadrant.” Meemeemee. Meemeemeemee, meemeemee. 4. Arthur Christmas Gross: $12,700,000 ($17,000,000) Screens: 3,376 (PSA $3,762) Days: 1 See, this is just what I’m talking about: It may have been worse for your Muppets. No less than you didn’t bottom out like Arthur Christmas. Meemeemee, meemee meemee meemeemeemee. Meemeemee! Meemee meemeemeemee meemee meemeemee. I don’t think James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie and Bill Nighy are extremely a few things i’d call “B-list limey voice tarts.” Meemeemee. Meemee? Well, at least because McAvoy is Scottish. Meemeemee, meemee, meemeemeemee. Meemee! Meemeemeemee! 5. Hugo Gross: $11,350,000 ($15,380,000) Screens: 1,277 (PSA $8,888) Days: 1 That is another one I couldn’t peg beginning the weekend. Loved the film, couldn’t see the market. Any idea what? Meemeemee, meemee, meemeemeemee. Meemeemee. Meemee? Meemeemee! The 3-D was advantageous, to make certain. To ensure that as I used to be alluding to a little ago, In my opinion Vital saw the writing round the wall if this involves family-film competition. Was 1,200 screens too conservative, too aggressive, or just right? Meemeemee. Meemeemeemee, meemee. Meemee. Meemeemeemee, meemee, meemee. Meemee! Meemeemee — meemeemee, meemee? Meemeemeemee, meemee. Precisely how wide every time they expand from this level? It seems appreciate it may use either situation. Meemee, meemeemee. Meemeemee meemeemeemeemee meemee. Fantastic. Gotham kudos mix star energy with low-budget indies

'Meek's Cutoff''Tree of Life''Take Shelter''Beginners''The Descendents'The Gotham Independent Film Honours represent an uncommon mixture of razzle-dazzle and gritty pluck.Held at Cipriani's in Wall Street -- expect lots of OWS-based jokes out of this year's hosts Oliver Platt and Edie Falco -- the kudos are among the couple of places on the planet where the kind of Sean Penn and Meryl Streep brush shoulders with projectionist-filmmaker Ronnie Bronstein and Ghanaian T-shirt salesperson-switched-actor Prince Adu. And where $20 million-plus movies starring major stars can compete -- and lose -- against micro-budget gems starring no-title talent.Remember, it is not only the Gothams, it is the Gotham Independent Film Honours. After studio films "The Departed," "Marie Antoinette" and "Small ChildrenInch were nommed for the best feature in 2006 invoking ire one of the indie community, Gotham coordinators re-top quality the big event in 2008, emphasizing its indie roots and restricting qualified films to individuals with independent distribution, understood to be individuals launched with a niche division, a completely independent distributor or self-distributed."There is lots of backlash," confesses Joana Vicente, the Independent Feature Project's professional director, who had been around the board at that time.Whilst the move might not have transformed the essential character from the Gothams, the IFP's primary fundraiser event where companies fork over $13,000-$30,000 per table, it's further sharp the org's goal of supporting individuals filmmakers who require a hands. This season while Alexander Payne's "The Descendents" and Terrence Malick's "Tree of Existence," both backed by Fox Searchlight, are up for that feature prize, they're became a member of by lower-budget, individually funded "Take Shelter," "Meek's Cutoff" and "Beginners.""It is good that they are all on a single playing area," states Vicente.Such all-inclusiveness could be particularly helpful for any more compact film. As "Take Shelter" producer Tyler Davidson states, "My neighbor might not switch out after i talk Gotham nominations, but he will get excited when I only say we are alongside Pitt and Clooney films. That's creating new audiences. And that is great for everybody -- for all of us, for that Gothams, but for the industry."Indie distribution executives, like Dylan Leiner of The new sony Pictures Classics, that is delivering "Take Shelter," and David Fenkel, leader of Oscilloscope Labs, which distributed nominees "Meek's Cutoff" and "Bellflower," also note the Gothams are ideally timed to jog the reminiscences of customers because the films go out into theaters, or on VOD along with other platforms. And because the first honours of year, Leslie Urdang, producer of "Beginners," states the Gothams, "are an essential indication of movies that opened up earlier around.InchWith out the large advertising pushes of the specialized company, micro-indies or more-and-coming talent may also make use of the Gothams to enhance their careers."That is what I believe we all do best," Vicente states. "Shine an easy on emerging talents, who're this is not on individuals radar, or if they're, we are assisting to solidify that."For low-budget director Sophia Takal, for example, nominated for that film not playing in a theater in your area award on her feature debut, "Eco-friendly," it's that parity with specialized studio fare that may really result in the difference. When she informed her mother the Clooney movie was up for any Gotham too, Takal states her mother "finally felt the cash I lent from her to create 'Green' was worthwhile.InchAssociated LINKS Tribute honors Rothman's indie pic roots Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Burning

Barrett Doss is a Sudanese sex worker, and Stephen Tyrone Williams is an artist who falls in love with her in Burning. A New Group presentation of a play in two acts by Thomas Bradshaw. Directed by Scott Elliott.Paul, et al. - Jeff Biehl Katrin - Reyna de Courcy Gretchen - Barrett Doss Older Chris - Hunter Foster Jack - Andrew Garman Michael - Drew Hildebrand Chris - Evan Johnson Simon - Danny Mastrogiorgio Noah - Andrew Polk Josephine - Larisa Polonsky Donald - Adam Trese Franklin - Vladimir Versailles Peter - Stephen Tyrone WilliamsThe New Group seems to have taken Thomas Bradshaw's semi-pornographic play "Burning" very seriously, and they would probably like us to do likewise. But the episodic plot, which loosely hangs on the coming of age of a teenage hustler, is wide open to ridicule, and the characters are one step up from cartoons. The players in Scott Elliott's lugubrious production solemnly shed their clothes and play their graphically simulated sex scenes without cracking a smile. But it's an effort for the rest of us to keep from howling at the pretensions of this softcore porn show. The first chapter of this sex fantasy opens in 1983, as a 14-year-old hustler named Chris (Evan Johnson) is talking his way into the household of Jack (Andrew Garman), a successful NY actor, and his partner, Simon (Danny Mastrogiorgio), a Broadway producer. Garman and Mastrogiorgio give these silly old queens a certain dignity, although that probably won't matter much to voyeurs who just want to identify with them when the not-so-innocent Chris enthusiastically embraces his role as their sex toy. But kids are bound to grow up, and in due time Chris leaves his loving "parents" for a playwright named Donald (Adam Trese). Bradshaw makes a clumsy attempt to include a grown-up Chris (Hunter Foster) in a parallel scenario set in the present day. But the story really hangs on the sexual education of a black painter named Peter (Stephen Tyrone Williams) who is given a one-man show at an important Berlin art gallery. (Jeff Biehl does such good work in the minor role of a gallery curator, it's a dirty shame he was passed over for a sex scene.) Once in Berlin, Peter runs afoul of Michael (Drew Hildebrand), a rival painter and a neo-Nazi who has an unhealthy relationship with his handicapped 16-year-old sister, Katrin (Reyna de Courcy). Oblivious to the whole Nazi thing -- and forgetting he has a (white) wife back home -- Peter is swept away in the permissive sexual climate and falls madly in love with a Sudanese sex worker. Anyone who's been following the plot so far should be able to see the wealth of possibilities for hook-ups, which the creatives would prefer to think of as "searing and graphic tales of self-invention and sexual identity." In the early scenes we're treated to the relatively straightforward combinations of Jack and Simon; Jack and Simon and Chris; and Chris and Donald. But as the play advances, the logistics become more complicated, especially for Peter, who has both a wife and a mistress to service. For the record, all the simulated sex scenes have been handsomely lighted (by Peter Kaczorowski), and a noticeable bit of artistry went into the smoothly staged scenes between that scary skinhead and his creepy sister. Which might suggest that anyone with a favorite sex fantasy would have no trouble finding someone to stage it.Sets, Derek McLane; costumes, Clint Ramos; lighting, Peter Kaczorowski; projections, Wendall K. Harrington; production stage manager, Valerie A. Peterson. Opened Nov. 14, 2011. Reviewed Nov. 9. Running time: 2 HOURS, 45 MIN. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

'Immortals' rethought 3D process

Stereographers committed to giving pic's characters "human volume" during conversion. 3D or not 3D? That's the question facing a lot of filmmakers as they weigh the extra costs of shooting in 3D or converting 2D footage to 3D against the potential box office upside of a 3D release. "Immortals," the Tarsem-helmed, vfx-heavy saga that opens Friday, faced no such dilemma. It was planned from the start as a 3D movie. But after shooting a handful of scenes in 3D early on, the producers opted to take the conversion route, both to improve production efficiencies and to manage costs. They also took steps to avoid some of the pitfalls of the conversion process that have bedeviled earlier films, which were criticized for their headache-inducing images and pop-up-book appearance. "We did a thorough analysis whether it would be better to shoot in 3D or to convert," said Tucker Tooley, the film's exec producer and co-prexy of Relativity Media, which produced the Universal release. One factor encouraging conversion was Tarsem's speed as a director. "He's just go, go, go, and when he's working fast, he gets a different energy and puts the whole film together in his head," said longtime collaborator and d.p. Brendan Galvin. "Some say it takes 10% longer to shoot in 3D. I think there's quite a bit more difference." The other reason was financial. "We saved money by shooting in 2D and converting to 3D in post," said Tooley. The bulk of the conversion was handled by the Mumbai facility of Prime Focus, where stereographer David Stump spent months supervising the work. "Shooting 3D would have required more cameras and technology, and would have allowed fewer setups per day, with extras waiting around the block for the battle scenes," said Stump. "It would have run into serious money -- a lot more than converting it. We did tests for Tarsem so he could see what it would look like, and he signed off. We committed to giving the characters 'human volume' so they wouldn't look like flat cardboard cutouts, and to achieve roundness in their faces." In fact, a small number of "Immortals" scenes were shot in 3D -- including material intended for a teaser trailer that ended up being a used in the film itself -- but the vast majority of the footage was captured in 2D. "I'm not saying I wouldn't shoot 3D," said Galvin. "I can see situations where that would be better. But on this particular film, with the ingredients we had, it wasn't the way to go." "Immortals," which cost almost $85 million, shot in 62 days on a soundstage in Montreal using Panavision Genesis digital cameras. "Conversion is a great tool if you start with that in mind," said Tooley. "It worked because we designed everything for the conversion." To further enhance the film's 3D display, "Immortals" is being made available in a higher-brightness version through technology from Real D and Master Image to compensate for the darkening effect of 3D glasses. Guard Describes Scene In Room Where Jackson Found

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The last days of Michael Jacksons life were filled with the adulation of fans, a rehearsal performance onlookers described as amazing and intense preparations for his big comeback in London. In good spirits, Jackson chatted with well-wishers outside his home and at the Staples Center where he practiced songs and dance routines before he returned home. Then, things took a tragic turn, according to Michael Amir Williams, who testified Wednesday in the trial of the doctor charged with involuntary manslaughter in the superstars death. Williams, who had gone with him to the rehearsal and had dropped Jackson at home, said he got a frantic call the next day from Jacksons doctor, Conrad Murray. He said, Get here right away. Mr. Jackson had a bad reaction. He said, Get someone up here right away, Williams told the jury. A security guard, Faheem Muhammad, testified that he arrived at Jacksons bedroom to find Murray sweating and nervous, leaning over Jackson and trying to revive him. He said that Jacksons two older children, Paris and Prince, were in shock, and that Paris fell to the ground, curled up and weeping. Moments later, Muhammad said, he heard Murray ask if anyone knew CPR. The testimony on the second day of the trial helped shed light on what Murray did and didnt do after he found Jackson unconscious in June 2009. Murray, 58, has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison and would have to relinquish his medical license. On June 24, 2009, the day before Jacksons death, Murray was in negotiations to join Jackson on his tour as his personal physician, testified lawyer Kathy Jorrie of concert giant AEG Live. She said she was gathering information for an insurance company to make sure Jackson was in good health and could be insured. Dr. Murray told me repeatedly that Michael Jackson was perfectly healthy, in excellent condition. Dont worry about it. Hes great, she recalled. Jorrie said Murray had added to his contract a provision for a CPR machine when they got to London for the highly touted show that would include 50 concerts over nine months. He needed to be sure if something went wrong he would have such a machine available, she said. He also told me it was customary. Murray signed the contract, which would give him $150,000 a month, and faxed it to her that night, she said. Jackson, however, would never get to sign it. In the late afternoon of June 24, Williams, Jacksons personal assistant, said he arranged for a car and accompanied his boss to Staples Center for a key rehearsal. He said Jackson was in good spirits and had the car stop at the gate so he could roll down the window and chat with fans who were always camped there. He would make sure we stopped, stick out his hand, anything to show his fans he loved them, he said. Williams managed to watch Jackson on stage. I was an employee but I was a fan first, he said. I would try to sneak in to watch him. I was working constantly, but I was able to see him perform a little. How was his performance, asked Deputy District Attorney David Walgren. Personally, I thought it was amazing, Williams said. I thought it was the best thing in the world. He had told me he didnt go 100 percent for the rehearsal. It was about 40 percent. But I thought it was great. They returned to Jacksons rented Holmby Hills mansion after that, stopping at the gate again. He was in good spirits, Williams said. He wanted to stop and say, Hi. He even had some conversation with the fans. Outside the house, parked in its usual spot, was Murrays car. Williams brought in gifts that had been given to Jackson and said good night. Williams checked out with the security staff and went home. The next day at 12:13 p.m. his cell phone rang. There was a message from Murray. Were you asked to call 911? Walgren asked. No sir, Williams said. He remembered reaching Jackson security guard Alberto Alvarez. I said, I dont know whats going on but you have to get in the house I said, Run. Hurry. Williams said he rushed from his downtown home and arrived just as Jacksons body was being loaded into an ambulance. He helped to gather Jacksons three children and put them in a car to follow the ambulance. What was Dr. Murrays appearance? Walgren asked. Frantic, he said. I knew it was serious. Williams said he was standing outside the emergency room area when Dr. Murray and a group of doctors emerged. He walked out and closed the curtains, he said softly. He said, He passed. At one point, Walgren had Williams identify a photograph of Jacksons children. The famous photo was taken at a memorial service shortly after Jacksons death was projected on a large courtroom screen. On cross-examination, defense attorney Ed Chernoff questioned Williams about Murrays actions at the hospital. He said Murray asked to be taken back to Jacksons home to collect some cream he believed Jackson would not want the public to know about. It was later found to be skin whitening cream that is used in the treatment of vitiligo, a skin condition that the singer had. Williams said he felt police would not want anyone returning to the home and he did not take Murray there. He then said the doctor said he was hungry and asked for food. Chernoff suggested that Williams should have known from Murrays call that there was an emergency. Williams disagreed. When I hear someone had a bad reaction, I dont think anything fatal, he said. He didnt tell me to call 911. Under questioning from Chernoff, Muhammad revealed that Jackson had asked Williams to contact a nurse four days before his death because he was experiencing weird symptoms. One of his hands was hot and his feet were cold, Muhammad said. He told Chernoff that he did not reveal that he had contacted the nurse, Cherilyn Lee, during interviews with police. He said he wasnt asked about it and didnt think it was relevant. Chernoff has been questioning witnesses about Jacksons interactions with other physicians, including dermatologist Arnold Klein. Muhammad said at times, Jackson visited Kleins office almost daily. A judge has blocked Klein from testifying in the case. Copyright 2011 by Associated Press.
